Five of the 10 teachers that received the Golden Apples award for excellence in teaching graduated from NEIU .
The awardees from NEIU are Carol Broos (M.A. ’86 Music) who teaches music at Sunset Ridge School in Northfield to 4-8 graders, Samina Khan who teaches Science at Clark Academic Preparatory Magnet High School in Chicago to 6-8 graders, Brooke Tippet Thompson (M.A. ’97 Music) who teaches music to K-8 graders at Pierce School of International Studies in Chicago, Natalie Neris-Guereca (B.A. ’02 Elementary Education: Teacher Education) who teaches 5th grade at Pershing West Magnet School in Chicago and Donnell White (B.A. ’02 Elementary Education: Teacher Education) who teaches Math to 7th and 8th graders at Clark Academic Preparatory Magnet High School in Chicago.
“Since 1986, when the program began, a total of 27 NEIU alumni have received Golden Apple Awards,” the June issue of Blue and Gold states.
The article continued to say, “Currently, approximately 3,800 NEIU graduates are teaching in the metropolitan Chicagoland area. Ninety-eight percent of all NEIU College of Education graduates report they feel well prepared for their jobs one year after graduation.”
