My first job was as a tutor with CEDA. I tutored elementary school students before I entered high school. My method is to teach the rudiments and rules of learning the subject. I will either have a book to help with reading, pronunciation, and vocabulary. And I will ask my students to have a dictionary to use.

I basically know the major and minor scales and I understand how to learn to play piano by scales. Voice is also learned with some sight singing.
