Confusion: 10 Helpfulness: 0 Clarity: 0 Superiority complex: 10 Rude/condescending/patronizing/pretentious levels: 20+ Not only does Professor Schroeder give an identical syllabus for each of his classes every single semester (and we're talking the same exact documents/assignments for American Literature, Globalizing Literacies, and American Drama), but he refuses to clarify, explain, and provide detail with any of his assignments. Instead, each question is met with a variation of these top three gems: "well, what do you think?", "check your book for answers", and "hey, let's talk about it later". *Spoiler alert*: later never comes. He is a lazy curriculum planner, which results in lazy grading, lazy office meetings, absent e-mails, and lazy discussions. Furloughs are hard, but while other professors make an actual effort to work around meetings to consult with their students, Professor Schroeder knows nothing but excuses and complaints about how hard it is for him. This effects us as students who are now praying for a C instead of striving for an A. If you want to sharpen your Google searching skills, take a class with him. If you are not excited by: - being in the presence of a teacher who lacks charisma and resources - being treated like a child - long periods of stressed silence - dull PowerPoints - unclear projects and ill-defined essays - unrealistically high standards (ask for an example paper and you will get a critical analysis from a renowned scholar instead of something relatable) - tests that ask questions about terms/topics that were never discussed in class - pointless presentations - unanswered e-mails - rushed office hours (e.g. scheduling for 3PM and someone else is scheduled for 3:05PM) - rubrics that follow no particular structure besides having "a relevant problem, a detailed analysis, a clear alternative" for every project (straight out of a 218 syllabus from 2014!! the criteria is the same for EVERY class!!) - feelings of not having learned a single piece of useful information If you like feeling engaged and enjoy the process of learning without wanting to tear out your hair and drop classes, do yourself a favour: skip Schroeder and take Kim, Poll, Scherman, or any of the wonderful staff that are available on campus instead.
I like some others had to create and account just to write a review on this prof.. Not only does he deserve it, it has to be done. If you want to get an A take another prof.. His lack of communication is terrible. He has the worst office hours. Its unacceptable to be a prof. and not check email.
Show up to class because if you miss anything, you might fail. His teaching method is very unorthodox and he'll try to push you past all limits. See him during office hours if you have any questions. That seems to be the only way to sort things out. Do your work and show you care otherwise.
I felt the need to create an account just to share how awful this guy is. Only C I have received at Northeastern adn it's not because of effort. Schroeder is unclear and not accommodating at at all. Stay away if possible.
Rollercoaster! You are given a syllbus the very first day so you know all the work that is ahead, but it's not clear how to achieve these goals until they are almost due. The work is not difficult, understanding the prof.s goal is difficult. friendly guy, but I prefer a more structured teaching style.
He is a little creepy. He assigns about four times as much HW as other prof.s who teach World of Fiction. He seems to be more interested in the quantity of work over the quality of work.
Was a great teacher for a grad class. Does a great job challenging students. Will push you to make your on conclusions, but it will be tough. |
