NEIU pulls together for Haiti
As Haitians struggle to get back on their feet, Americans have quickly responded to their cries for help and have quickly pulled together to help the Haitians during their time of need. Even at NEIU, The Student Activities Office and various other student organizations are working together to raise money and collect donations to help this struggling country.
A 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti on Jan. 12 that ravished the already poverty-stricken country. The Haitian government has estimated the death toll around 200,000. News reports have reported looting due to lack of food and much needed supplies.
The Justice Studies Department, Academic Development, and NEIU Student Government have combined efforts to help and are asking NEIU students to donate items such as clothes, canned foods, feminine supplies, baby food and health supplies (soaps, toothpaste, brushes, etc.).
Also, if students wish to donate money they can do so by visiting www.neiu.edu and clicking on the Haitian icon. In other efforts made by students to help raise donations, WZRD, the NEIU radio station, is putting on two benefit concerts at five dollars each and both concerts will be held in Alumni Hall Jan. 28 and Mar. 5 at 7:00 p.m.
And for any students interested, various student organizations will be hosting a rummage sale on Jan. 26 in Village Square from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students are asked to bring items that they would like to donate to be sold such as clothes, CDs, DVDs, and any partially used items.
Student Government President Miguel Loeza sent a mass e-mail on Jan. 22 in which he encouraged NEIU to "continue working together to raise the most funds possible to support Haiti."For more information on how you can help please contact Justice Studies LWH 4062 or dial ext. 4790.
