Spirit Week kicked off on Oct. 27 with a Halloween pumpkin carving contest and a costume contest hosted by the Student Union. The judges for both contests were Veronica Rodriguez, Assistant Director of Student Activities, Felicia Keelen, Director of the Student Union, and Rugen Reyes, Graphic Designer for Student Activities. The carved pumpkins were judged on creativity, how intricate the carvings were and the neatness of the design. Terry O'Connor took first place for his Einstein pumpkin, followed by Michelle Cardiel and her Spider pumpkin in second place, and Nana Jeun in third place for her Zigna pumpkin. Participants in the costume contest briefly modeled their outfits and were judged on the originality of their costumes, their overall appearance and reaction from the audience. First place went to Cecilia Carboni for her costume as Kali, the Indian Goddess of Death. Second place went to Ruth Johnson as the Queen of Hearts. Third place went to Alvaro Rios as Grim. And Honorable Mention was given to Jackie Nowotnik as a frightful clown.
