67th Golden Globe Awards:

Overview

This year's Golden Globe Awards brought many shocking surprises. The nominations were nearly as disappointing as the winners. Lets begin with the winner for Best Foreign Language Film: "The White Ribbon" from Germany. The favorite and most seemingly likely film to win was Spain's "Broken Embraces," not only because of Penélope Cruz's performance but Pedro Almodóvar's direction and script. Not every director can handle such a challenging topic, and the film's noir themes deserved a mention here.

Next is Best Animated Film, won by Disney's "Up." Though "Up" was everybody's favorite and was one of the award night's few righteous winners, Focus Features' "Coraline" had the year's most exceptional and original animation.

Best Screenplay was won by Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner for "Up in the Air." The movie was a sweet romantic comedy with some thrilling elements, and was another of the night's few deserving winners. I can't help mentioning and praising two of 2009's screenplays- one nominated, Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," and the other one not nominated, Jon Lucas, Scott Moore and Todd Phillips' "The Hangover," since not every writer could tackle a comedy like the three of them did.

Next is Best Director, won by James Cameron for "Avatar." Well, "Avatar" deserves accolades for special effects, I do admit that, but I can't help but think of Kevin Costner's 1990 epic "Dances with Wolves" all the time. Yet you have Kathryn Bigelow (Cameron's divorcee) for the year's most exceptional and amazing film, "The Hurt Locker."

Then you have Best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture- Actor, won by Christoph Waltz for "Inglourious Basterds." Another deserving winner who deserved to win not only because of his ability to be bilingual onscreen, but because of his surprising comedic timing. Mo'Nique won best Supporting Performance in a Motion Picture- Actress for "Precious." I have to admit that she is without a doubt a talented actress.

Next is Best Performance in a Motion Picture - Drama - Actor, won by Jeff Bridges for "Crazy Heart." It makes sense considering "Crazy Heart" is relatively a lesser known movie because of its limited release whereas the other big contender, George Clooney for "Up in the Air" received a much wider release. Best Performance in a Motion Picture - Drama - Actress was won by Sandra Bullock for "The Blind Side." Well, at least Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious") was nominated. She could've won.

Despite of some major disappointments, a few deserving winners covered that up. Let's hope that these mistakes aren't made by the Academy Awards.
