NEIU alum runs for Congress
In the Illinois' 9th congressional district, one of the names on your Nov. 4 voting ballot is going to be that of a Northeastern Illinois University alum.
Michael Benjamin Younan, who graduated from NEIU with a degree in political science, is the Republican candidate for Congress in Illinois' 9th congressional district. The 9th district consists of Evanston, Skokie, Morton Grove, Niles, Park Ridge and Norridge and also parts of Wilmette, Northfield, Glenview, Golf, Rosemont, Des Plaines, Lincolnwood and the Chicago neighborhoods of Edgewater and Rogers Park.
Younan is running against Democrat Janice Shakowsky, the current congresswoman of the 9th district who has held that position for the past 10 years.
"My priority is to promote growth, prosperity and progress throughout the district," says Younan, who believes that the economy of the 9th district, and the country as a whole, is suffering.
Younan believes that people want to see change happen instead of just hearing about it.
"This is no time to be claiming that we want to change things. This is the time where we need the people that are going to be proactive. We need to elect someone that's going to go in there and get the job done," says Younan.
"I'm not the kind of guy that likes to sit down there and talk to you and preach to you," says Younan. "I want to go in there, I want to fix this thing, get it going, get the people back to where they should be."
Aside from being a politician, Younan is also the founder of American Clinical Supplies and Vision America Eye Care.
Younan says he owes a lot to the educators at NEIU and calls the faculty a "superstar faculty."
"The wealth of knowledge that you accumulate there is overwhelming," says Younan of NEIU.
Younan urges students who aren't sure about what they want to study to look into political science. He also advises students to "get to know your professors, stay close to them, and don't get discouraged."
