Emma Stone is a gem in hilarious, raunchy teen flick 'Easy A'
Every so often, a movie comes out about an unpopular-turned-popular high school student, who gains self-respect and teaches us to stay true to ourselves. And while "Easy A" follows that road, it also promises Emma Stone punching a guy below the belt to make a fake hook-up sound real. Oh yes, it goes there.
The movie's heroine, Olive (brilliantly played by Stone), is just another face out of the hundreds at high school. Her best friend Rhi (Alyson Michalka) is more interested in hearing herself talk, so Olive's parents (Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci) are her silly, but accepting, support system.
But Olive's status quickly goes from virgin to one with much experience, when she is overheard telling Rhi a lie about her steamy hook-up with a non-existent guy. And who better to hear this lie than Marianne (Amanda Bynes), the cliché, devout Christian?
The movie mirrors much of the book "The Scarlett Letter," in which a woman sleeps with a pastor and is cast out and deemed a harlot by the rest of the town. Consequently, Olive references the book throughout her narration in the movie—like why she sews red A's on her clothes—in an attempt to debunk her own misconception as a floozy.
And let's not forget Gossip Girl eye-candy Penn Badgley, who plays Todd, Olive's crush since they were kids. Goofy and sweet, Badgley's character suits him perfectly, allowing him to be Olive's knight-in-woodchuck-mascot-armor.
"Easy A" is full of hilarious scenes, mainly due to Stone's adorable sarcasm and antics (you won't be able to keep a straight face when listening to "Pocket Full of Sunshine" afterwards). But all the laughs are easily silenced when things get out of hand and Stone's tear-streaked face reminds audience members how lies can sometimes ruin lives.
However, as the rule for teen flicks goes, things get better once the moral of the story comes to light: the truth shall set you free. Pretty straight-forward, right? Well, watching Stone become every quiet girl's alter ago by wearing corsets and stripper heels to school makes her white lie worth it all.
