Student Org Fair full of friendly, Greek spirit
During the second week of school, Northeastern's Greek organizations came out to recruit new members and have some fun under the sun, despite the pesky bees that surrounded students. There was the usual scene of members from fraternities and sororities gathered at their tables and were happy to talk to freshman, as well as interested upperclassmen. Salsa music blasted from the speakers as students relaxing on the quad took the opportunity to dance away the start-of-school-blues. Although some believe that NEIU should have Greek organizations because of its non-campus residence reputation, passionate members disagree. "Because it's a commuter school, Northeastern should have a Greek life," said Yoab Abundias, vice president of Sigma Lamda Beta, the nation's largest Latino fraternity. "When you're in an organization you make friends and grow networks, otherwise you'll just leave after class." And these networks serve twice as important. "Once you join, you're part of a family not only in school, but also out of school," said Abundias. Like others that set up their tables, Abundias and his fraternity brothers displayed their colors and school spirit for students walking by that seemed uninterested, but noticed the loud and welcoming sounds from the Greeks.
