Sex is Good, Getting to Know Yourself is Better
The Women's Studies Program of NEIU encouraged women to celebrate themselves by inviting students and staff to the "Sex is Good Workshop" on Tuesday, March 29, to top off Women's History Month. Serah Deysach, from Early to Bed, gave a seminar on how sex is different for women than it is for men, as well as empowering women by discussing orgasm and explaining the nuances of vaginas, with the help of a vagina puppet.
"The idea that men and women have orgasm at the same time is malarkey," Deysach said when talking about how orgasms are different for everybody and that they are nowhere near as easy as popular culture makes it seem. Deysach gave several reasons why women are different in regards to orgasm, such as women not knowing how they orgasm, sometimes if a woman has been sexually assaulted it could hinder an individual's desire and/or experience and sometimes it can just be mental.
She also said, "knowing what your body feels like is a good thing," in regards to masturbation. Then again, sometimes hands don't cut it. "Usually when something looks like a dick, it's meant to go in a hole," said Deysach and most women don't orgasm just by having intercourse. The majority of women have clitorally stimulated orgasms, versus the misconception of vaginally stimulated orgasm. That is not to say it is not possible, however, more than likely a woman will orgasm from clitoral stimulation, since it does have twice as many nerve endings than a penis.
She talked about the various kinds of dildos and said that silicone is very safe and easy to clean, as well as silicone-based lubrication, which is longer lasting than water-based, especially in water. She said that it is safest to use water-based, glycerin-free lubrication because it has a better ph balance that is better for the body to deal with. Also, it is just a good idea to keep oil-based products out since it is more difficult to clean. Deysach said, "lube is your friend for any kind of genital stimulation," and urged everybody to remember that "if it hurts, don't do it."
