Out on a school night: Mary's Attic
It's not hard for the karaoke enthusiast to find a place to do their best Queen rendition on any given night. Plenty of Chicago bars offer karaoke once or twice a week, but the karaoke-goer must often put up with dismal song selection, rude or otherwise uninvolved crowds and old-man-bar atmosphere for the chance to get behind a microphone. However, at Mary's Attic in Andersonville singers can enjoy karaoke without sacrificing the elements that make for a fun karaoke experience. Mary's Attic, located a floor above the restaurant Hamburger Mary's, offers "Maryoke" every Sunday and Wednesday night. The song selection is fairly large, with choices ranging from typical karaoke standards to obscure musical theatre selections. Three of the bar's seven flat screen TVs display lyrics and a list of upcoming singers, so singers never have to wonder if they're up next. Also, most of the singers at Mary's Attic are actually pretty talented, which makes listening to karaoke singers rather enjoyable. Even when singers aren't so good, the audience at Mary's Attic is still supportive and always quick to join in singing popular songs. The vibe at Mary's Attic is probably the best part. There is a small stage for singers with a red curtain behind it, multi-colored lights pointed in different directions and a large disco ball, all of which make the singer feel a little glamorous. The bar itself is designed like an attic, complete with old mismatched furniture, a painted-on skylight that reveals a permanent cloudy sky and a bed with old crocheted pillows. There is a large square bar in the center of this "attic" which serves a large range of specialty drinks that aren't exactly cheap but are pretty tasty. Mary's Attic is a great place to go for any karaoke singer looking to not only sing to their hearts content, but to really enjoy the place where they're singing.
