The Exorcist: This movie left a generation without sleep. It had people leave the theater screaming. It has, without a doubt, the most inappropriate use of a crucifix I have ever seen. The idea that what happened to that little girl could happen to anyone is seriously terrifying. This film is the definition of horror, it is the reason we go to the movies.

Alien: "In space, nobody can hear you scream." That tagline sums up exactly what makes this movie terrifying. That fear of isolation, where there is nowhere to run and nobody to help you runs through this movie's veins. It is terror at its most basic. Well, the nasty, face eating alien is pretty scary too.

The Blair Witch Project: When you are watching this movie, you may wonder what is supposed to be scary about it. They never show a monster, they never explain anything and all you see are little piles of rocks and weird sticks. But when you go to bed that night, lie under the covers and think about it. That is when this movie gets you.

Silence of The Lambs: Cannibalism is a subject few people would like to speak of, yet this film dives deep into the mind of a psychopath, who does just that. Every aspect of this film is meant to make you feel uncomfortable, but it will be that damn hissing sound that gives you goosebumps once you are done.

Psycho: Alfred Hitchcock's best, no horror list would not be complete without it. Norman Bates is such a terrifying character and his motives so twisted that he is guaranteed to live in your nightmares long after you watch this film.

Evil Dead: The monumental slasher flick, this movie is pretty deep despite the campy acting. It deals with fear of the unknown, sexuality, trust and friendship, but most importantly it scares the crap out of you, and that is precisely what you want from a horror film.

The Thing: A science team trapped in Antarctica need to figure out who among them is infected by some type of alien virus. The amount of tension present in the scenes where they need to test each other's blood can be cut with a knife. Not to mention if you do not think you are going to hurl when you see  the  virus infect different body parts and make them independent, something is wrong with you.

Saw: Despite its numerous sequels, the original still stands as an extremely solid horror flick. Leaving the audience in the dark until the very end, the movie pulled such twists that you cannot stop watching it, no matter what horrible things were happening on screen. Not to mention the fact that it plays so well with our fear that all sins and vices will be punished.

Audition: A Japanese classic, this film is not intended for the weak stomached. It crafts a terrifying tale of lonely girl with a dark past who projects her worst fears into the people she dates. The torture scene at the end will leave you speechless.

Paranormal Activity: Love it or hate it, you cannot deny that this film presents horror to the YouTube generation in a new, more believable light. Its philosophy of showing you the truth little by little while still leaving you questioning what happened near the end is remarkable.
