The President's Pen - Northeastern Illinois University Sociology Club
NEIU Sociology Club is a great group comprised of Sociology majors, minors and other interested NEIU students. We get together to collaborate on interests concerning how we are all social actors inextricably placed within a social, cultural, political and economic framework. We tackle these issues through education and activism including debates on chosen topics (Cafe Society), presentations of social research (Brown Bag), volunteering, activism, organizational solidarity and more! Our goal is to discuss and promote social justice and activism on a personal and societal level, while learning and growing from one another. We are open to ideas, suggestions and HAVING FUN! We are quite the social bunch and encourage everyone to join us! Keep an eye out for upcoming Sociology Club events and feel free to share your ideas for future activities.
Officer Bios:
Co-Chair:Nicole Maldonado
Nicole is a senior majoring in Sociology. This is her second semester at NEIU and plans to graduate in the fall of 2012. She joined the sociology club last year and instantly felt welcomed by students and faculty. Soon after, she felt motivated to take on a leadership role in order to inspire others and create an environment where academics and activism can thrive. Her interests include astronomy, politics and animal rights. Her aspirations include pursuing a doctoral degree in sociology and working to combat urban poverty.
Co-Chair: Andrea Yetzer
Andrea has been a member of the Sociology Club since early 2009. She is a double major in Sociology and Psychology, a member of Psi Chi and Alpha Chi honor societies and is working on applying to grad school for her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. She has a variety of interests including baseball, adventure racing, academia, concerts/theater, political activism and karaoke. Her favorite things about sociology are examining the inter-sectionality of race, gender and class, as well as sexual orientation inequalities and trying to bridge the gap between macro and micro-level change.

In addition to her work with the Sociology Club, Alexis is an active member and treasurer of the Feminist Collective, an ally of the GLBTQA community and a McNair Scholar. She has several aspirations, some of which include earning her doctoral degree in sociology, teaching college and working to influence positive social change through activism and research. Some of her influences are bell hooks, Audre Lorde and Ida B. Wells-Barnett.
Treasurer: Shantrell Rogers
Shantrell is a senior majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies with a minor in Sociology. Working along with the other officers and members, she hopes to ensure that the club will put sociology into practice through activism. Shantrell tutors kindergarten and first grade students in reading at John B. Murphy Elementary and is a new staff writer at the Independent. She hopes to shine a light on the amazing events that take place on campus and in the local community. In her free time she likes to attend events hosted by other student organizations such as the Feminist Collective and .:Seeds:. Literary Arts Journal. Shantrell urges all students to get involved on campus in any way possible because it enriches academic experiences and creates a sense of community.
