NEIU Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies
The Jacob H. Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies (CCICS) is located in the historic Bronzeville community at 700 East Oakwood Blvd. The center offers both a Bachelors and Masters of Arts in Inner City Studies. The program was originally designed to train teachers to communicate effectively with underprivileged minority students in Chicago's urban inner city communities.
The Inner City Studies program addresses the issues of culture, ethnicity, racism and social exclusion in the urban education experience, particularly as they relate to African-Americans and Latinos. The program offers an interdisciplinary curriculum which applies the theories of social justice and the lack of communication and examines the relationship between them and the significant statistics of negative interpretation within minority student's classroom evaluations.
Inner City Studies (ICS) curriculum helps the applicant comprehend the history, culture, and language of inner city pupils to break the barrier between communication and culture shock in the classroom environment. The keystone of the CCICS campus is to establish an accurate and scientific behavioral standard on the level of the pupil in order to avoid misdiagnosis and stereotypes concerning the student's capabilities for learning.
With the belief that it is important that students are able to identify with the lessons they learn to ensure a successful outcome of the student's performance in academia at the core of its existence, the CCICS program provides a solid theoretical and practical core studies for education and social science majors who plan to pursue a career in the African-American and Latino urban communities.
