Just say no to the Big O!

Abstract:

As a writer, the things I know about the Olympics are relatively simple: buff bods, sports, wholesomeness and gorgeous figure skating. The only person I know personally who ever had anything to do with the Olympics is my friend, the great Poet Laureate of Ohio, Lonna Kingsbury. She was given the honor of carrying the Olympic torch one year.

Simple. That is, until my teenage son turned up an Expendable Youth song entitled "2016" and said, "Hey Mom! Listen to this!"...

The local government in Chicago is trying to make it look like everyone is behind the bid, but really there are a lot of people who are actually paying attention to the proposed plan. There are many things in the plan that are alarming and are clearly a bad idea, not to mention Chicago always always goes way over budget on any large project. This is likely to cause more harm than good.

Not to discredit the plight many people might endure if the Olympics come to Chicago. But, China hosted while a population of humans equivalent that of Chicago were censored, beaten and even killed for raising their voice for freedom. Not to mention the concern of the pollution the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had. Also, next year in South Africa the nation will host the FIFA World Cup. Nelson Mandela did a lot for the country, but just don't go to far outside the major city limits, you'll see the shanty towns where people still live in a constant struggle to obtain clean water. The question is what do the Olympics mean, when they probably won't fix anything except improve tourism and the local economy (rarely the politics). Your article does bring up good points on why we shouldn't host the Olympics. But, look at the other cities up for bid. Madrid, Spain hosted them in 1992 and the issue with the Basque region; Rio De Janeiro, sure it will be the first time a South American country to host the Olympics, but the IOC shared concern about their crime rate; Tokyo, they've hosted before. And of course the US has hosted the Summer games in 1904, 1932, 1984, 1996.

Every city that has hosted the Olympics has had their share of problems, it is now up to the IOC to figure what city has the least risks and the greatest "possible" rewards. Your article has merit, because along with your opinion and others who share it people are raising their concerns in a subversive manor that will eventually be unavoidable for the Mayor. Whether Chicago gets the Olympics or not Mayor Daley will have his work cut out for him to TRULY get the things that need to get done with the "city with big shoulders."
