Validating your laziness

Many people come upon revelations and realizations while on the job which enable them to discover just exactly what they can and can’t get away with. In Corinne Maier’s new book, Bonjour Laziness: Why Hard Work Doesn’t Pay, she addresses hypocrisies, idiosyncrasies, and banalities in business in a humorous light. In doing so, she also provides insight into the pitfalls facing managers and encourages workers to practice “active disengagement” whenever possible. Her reasoning seems to be that everyone else is doing it, so why not you? Her book really isn’t a how-to guide, but more of a “why you should” guide, and it is handy and entertaining for anyone considering a future in business. The humor peppered throughout the book is very dry and rooted in experience, but if you take the time to read it, you will surely be both educated and entertained. What is best about the book is how it can either be read all at once or just picked up and skimmed, stopping at whatever chapter catches your fancy, and still take something away from it. The best chapters when it comes to providing entertainment have to be “Business Speaks an Incomprehensible Language” and “The Idiots You Rub Shoulders With,” while “Why There’s No Risk in Disengaging Yourself” provides the most useful information. But really anyone who takes the time to even read just a few portions of a chapter will come away with some helpful and funny tips of how to make it in the business world. Maier’s book is a must-read for fans of The Office or Scott Adams and would make a great graduation present. The vital information inside Bonjour Laziness is an essential tool for preparing fledglingbusinessmen and women for their futures.
