Sports/Rec: Fall into Fitness

After a summer of barbeques and vacation-coladas, Campus Recreation will host a healthy initiative to welcome students back to school. As the NEIU community celebrates the 15th annual Fall into Fun week, Campus Recreation will join the festivities with their Fall into Fitness schedule.

On Friday, September 12, the Campus Recreation Staff will host the Fall into Fun Run. Starting at 11 a.m. at the PE Complex, the 1.5 mile run will circle the main NEIU campus. Registration is open to faculty, students, family members and community members. The price of registration is $5 with an NEIU identification card and $8 for all others.

The Fall into Fun 3K is the second race event hosted by NEIU in the past year. Last spring, the Golden Eagle 5K was a success according to race organizers. Elizabeth Bacherta, one of the 5K organizers last spring, said, “[Runners are] one group we hadn’t targeted yet.” The 3K is only the first of various races planned for this fall.

After a heart pumping 3K jog around the block, the NEIU community is invited to join Campus Recreation’s newly certified Zumba instructors. The official on-campus Zumba launch will take place in the main lobby of the PE Complex at noon. The Latin-inspired dance-fitness class will be demonstrated by each of the eight new Zumba instructors on campus, including Martha P. Montes, Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness. “If you can have a good time, you can Zumba,” Montes said. “And you will sweat.”

Fitness class demonstrations are common for the start of a semester. The condensed sample class gives the Campus Recreation staff the opportunity to showcase new classes and new instructors. Demonstration classes also offer the NEIU community a chance to try out classes they may be interested in.

After the workouts, Fall into Fitness gets back on track with the campus’s Fall into Fun routine. This includes a free picnic where Campus Recreation staff will offer burgers, veggie burgers, drinks, and other snacks. The staff will also host games to entertain people and encourage attendees to interact and meet.

There will be an information table with fitness class schedules and other Campus Recreation activities. Some new information includes extended hours for the PE Complex, new membership fee, and new fitness classes such as Zumba and Boxing. NEIU personal trainers and other staff members will also be on hand to answer questions.
