Being a commuter school is not easy for NEIU students. Some people claim that this place becomes a ghost town after a certain hour, some claim they have nothing to do during activity hour (since joining clubs was not in their best interest) and others don’t complain because they simply go home after their last class ends. However, if you are one of the brave few who remain at school and put the effort into getting involved, you will find NEIU is just as active as any other university.
Many students fear going to a new school where they don’t have any friends. They spend a lot of their time in the first weeks of classes scoping out quiet places where they can do homework between classes, and many times don’t even stay on campus at all. This is perfectly fine for many students who plan on transferring out of NEIU so that they don’t make any connections they’d have to break when they leave. Nonetheless, sometimes students get bored and decide to explore their social options.
When you see the energy at Org Fair and see just how many clubs and organizations there are at this school, the title of “commuter school” takes on a new meaning. There is as much stuff to do here as there is in any self-respecting dormitory school. Clubs covering any type of interest or cause.
If the commitment of a club isn’t your thing, there are always hundreds of student activities going on every semester in which to get involved. The only people who make this school a ghost town are those who don’t participate. There is a reason why First Year Experience (FYE) classes implore the students to take part in co-curriculars, it is by far the easiest way to make friends. So in case you are wondering what is the big deal with the change in activity hour or are tired of not doing anything in this school but sitting in lectures, give a co-curricular a shot; its what keeps this school alive.
