Japonais Chicago Review

The sushi restaurant Japonais opened its Chicago doors in 2003. Word spread fast about the River North hot spot. Scenesters flocked there to sip sake martinis, famous celebrities rented the venue for private parties, reservations were required, and the high price tag was seemingly unpretentious. Two years later foodies could still expect to be awed by creative concoctions, and pretentious trixies could still generate social capital by drinking here. A high rolling regular even raised superficial curiosity from the then Bears QB, who was sitting two tables away. Japonais provided an atmosphere fit for Chicago’s upwardly mobile ‘Gordon Geckos.’ The service, atmosphere, and food had a perfect balance of swank and sophistication. Five years later Japonais maintains a steady crowd, likely due to the trendy reputation developed early on. Groups from the suburbs flock in limos to celebrate special occasions. The menu is tasty but tired. Classics like the hot rock should stay but in general it needs an update.

The servers desperately need a refresher course. An impressive ambience, creative cuisine, and expert service are basic staples of pricey restaurants like Japonais. The quality of service shouldn’t mirror Chili’s Togo at the airport. At the very least servers should be attentive, familiar with the menu, and remember to put in orders. Current poor service is illustrated by a twenty minute wait for drinks, and ordering dessert four times because they are out of three of the four items.

Over the past seven years Japonais has earned the reputation as one of Chicago’s premier sushi restaurants. The quality of service has gone down hill and the prices are still high. If you’ve never been, Japonais is worth a visit for at least drinks and appetizers in the lower lounge. If you’re on a budget but love fresh, delicious, and creative sushi check out Sushi Para II in Lincoln Park. They offer a made to order all you can eat deal for around $20.00 and it’s BYOB.
