Puerto Rican artist visits Northeastern

Renowned Puerto Rican artist, Richard Santiago visited NEIU thanks to an invitation extended to him by Que Ondee Sola magazine on Thursday, April 1 during activity hour.

In an intimate and friendly setting, Santiago spoke about his artwork and what he called the Latino experience. “Art has been a way for us to tell our story from our perspective,” Santiago said, as he discussed the important role art has in Puerto Rican culture. Santiago then went on to talk about a documentary he has been working on which details the history of professional boxing in Puerto Rico. The documentary, “En La Esquina”, follows two budding boxers through their struggle to become world champions.

In an effort to explain why he chose the sport of boxing, Santiago discussed the views many outsiders have on boxing. In his opinion, people often view Puerto Rican boxing culture as violent and end up missing out on its other aspects. He pointed out that the boxers follow strict regimens and follow exact order in their lives. Santiago compared this to Tibetan monks.

“I know the detractors,” Santiago pointed out, “I know that it is violent but what other options are there for these kids? Dealing drugs on the street or going into the army that life would be far more violent.” Students were also shown a short teaser trailer for the documentary, which showed footage of several boxers, including the rising star Mario Santiago.

After the trailer, Santiago talked about the difficulty he has had in funding the project and the amount of time it has taken from his own life. He was no longer finding time to paint, which is his main profession.

Still, Santiago said that he developed a new love for boxing and made a strong connection with the boxer Mario Santiago. “[Mario Santiago’s story] is a beautiful story, it has got to be told and we have to find a way.”

Richard Santiago wrapped up his discussion with students by taking questions from the audience. The event was concluded with a authentic Puerto Rican lunch provided by Que Ondee Sola magazine members.

Twenty-five new art pieces by Richard Santiago will be showing at the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture (IPRAC) from April through June. For more details visit www.iprac.org/programs_events.htm.
