Worthwhile blogs for college students

Weblogs come in many shapes and sizes. Some are filled with useful information and some are more personal to the author. Some are updated regularly and some look like the author dropped off the face of the earth. There are many that cater to prospective and current college students. Here are some that might be of interest to you.

ZenCollegeLife.com has more than one author. It is a collection of articles that are sometimes entertaining and almost always informative. One post describes, “Why Benjamin Franklin was so much better than you.” It includes Franklin’s 13 values that he lived by and gives tips about creating your own set of rules to live by. Another post talked about skills that you wouldn’t learn in college, things like how a credit card works and how to jump start a car. There’s always something new to learn here, or at one of their favorites sites.OneDayOneJob.com is exactly what it says. It spotlights one company to work for and provides links to where you can apply for a job. Even if the company is not hiring now, it does give you an idea about where you would like to work. The site has been active since November 2007, so there are plenty of different companies to choose from. Past employers included ESPN, Sony Pictures, and Rock Star Games. The author also has another site devoted to internships called One Day One Internship.com. The sites themselves are easy to maneuver around and are not filled with useless clutter. They are simple and yet eye-catching.

TheSimpleDollar.com is all about giving simple financial advice. It is written by a man who went through a bad time financially and learned a lot about personal finance as he slowly rebuilt his credit. He offers simple advice like whether an auto loan should be considered good debt or bad debt. His number one rule to manage your finances is to spend less than what you earn. This sounds obvious but in fact is probably the hardest thing for many, especially college students, to do. The only bad thing about the site is the clutter. It is difficult to find things sometimes but other than that the site is great.

Learnmegood2.blogspot.com is a blog that might not interest all of you but is a good site to mention nonetheless. As NEIU is filled with students who aspire to be teachers, this one would be a good blog to include. Learn Me Good was a book about a former design engineer and his first year teaching 3rd grade math and science. The blog itself is like a continuation of the book. Mister Teacher, as he’s called, describes day-to-day problems and offers insight to others about being a teacher. Even if you don’t learn anything, his writing style and tone leave you endlessly amused.

Technorati.com is a blog directory about any kind of blog that could possibly interest anyone. While these blogs weren’t found using Technorati, it is still a great resource. There are thousands of blogs to be discovered on the site and around the internet. All it takes is the time to find some that interest you.
