Hot Mess

It’s easy to say that whoever hasn’t heard the 2009 summer anthem, “Good Girls Go Bad,” by Cobra Starship, featuring Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester, must believing under a rock or in a cave. The song, still playing on the radio now, hit number one on the iTunes charts within days of its release. The band’s third album “Hot Mess” was much anticipated and finally released Aug. 11. Hot Mess is definitely about letting loose of all inhibitions and dancing to the beat. The electro-pop vibe throughout the album is unlike any other form and shows an inability for comparison to other bands.

The first track, “Nice Guys Finish Last,”  is very low key and soft. It sounds like a mix of electro-pop with some fun 50s burlesque music in the background. The second track, “Pete Wentz is the Only Reason We’re Famous,” the song goes through a roller coaster of high beats, 2nd listeners can’t help but dance to the chorus, “Smash it up, Smash it up, I’m gonna kick it down. Be cool tonight; don’t want to start a fight.” Gabe Saporta sings about what he does best in this song, boasting his fame in everyone’s face, with lyrics like “And I may not be loved, but they always recall my name.”

The third track is the well-known “Good Girls Go Bad.” No need to describe this song, its success speaks for itself. The newest release off their album, “Hot Mess,” is by far my favorite track. It’s very upbeat and the best dance track of the album. This song praises all bad girls, and their “hot” behavior with lyrics like, “stumblin’, but yeah you still lookin’ hella fine. Keep doing what you’re doing and Imma’ make you mine.”

With “Hot Mess,” the band experimented with a lot of different styles of music, like in tracks, “The Scene is Dead,” “Long Live the Scene” and “The World Will Never Do.” However, the band kept true to their own style and to the joy of their oldest fans produced three songs. The tracks, “You’re Not in on the Joke,” “Wet Hot American Summer,” and “Move Like You’re Gonna Die,” sound like the old school Cobra Starship with their very playful sound and lyrics.
