University’s Internet Dial-Up service to be phased out

In a recently released statement, Director of University Computing Services, Kim Tracy, announced the university’s plan to begin phasing out dial-up Internet service on campus.

The plan will be completed in two phases. The first phase, which took effect July 16, cut the university’s dial-up connections by 40%. According to Tracy, the cut will remove unused capacity, and not impact current users.

The second phase will see the service completely discontinued by July 1st 2008.

The statement refers to “a significant decrease in usage” and “surging equipment maintenance charges,” as the main reasons for the decision to cut service. Tracy also pointed to the increased use and availability of high speed internet.

Attempts to reach Computing Services for comment were unsuccessful.
