Wrapped in a Ribbon and Tied in a Bow: Preview of NEIU’s Street Scene Sasha Gerrtison, Director

With a personal rating of four and a half stars, it can be said that the Tony award-winning Street Scene by Kurt Weill, is going to be a hit at NEIU!  Directed by NEIU’s Sasha Gerrtison and in collaboration with such a diverse, large, and multi-talented cast – the stage will be filled with talented NEIU music students, graduates, and faculty.

Coined as an “American opera”, Street Scene is set in the poor/working class neighborhood of Manhattan in the 1940s. The plot is surrounding a few families from the neighborhood. Their stories bring the audience into their experiences of friendship, adultery, abuse, alcoholism, racial tension, young love and murder.

Though the original play was in German, NEIU’s rendition will be performed entirely in English. The orchestra will be conducted by NEIU’s very own, Michael Melton.

There will be four performances Wednesday, April 11 through Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the NEIU Auditorium. Tickets are available now online or in-person at the NEIU Box Office. The prices are as follows: General Admission: $10 NEIU students, faculty, and staff: Free with I.D. Street Scene is not suitable for children under 12. There will also be free parking available to audience members in parking Lot F for every night of the performance.
