Every other Friday night, at a nice little pub called the Green Door Tavern, you can catch a great improvisational group called Liquid.
Liquid is a group of several improvers who do political and social satire. Improv is basically like watching a play that is made up on the spot, based on suggestions from the audience. Liquid did a great job of entertaining the crowd with jokes about the upcoming 2008 election and other political figures.
Liquid was not the only group to perform, a group called CIA opened. They started off a little rocky with some humor about rocket scientists. Towards the middle of the show, they got more laughs with their impersonations of Arnold and Sly Stallone, also the ever-annoying Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins.
The crowd enjoyed
Liquid much more, they were a much more experienced group, and better understood what the crowd wanted. They did not only do political humor, they also did family and school elections.
It is hard to entertain a crowd when you have no script, and the audience does not know what they are in for. You have to know when a scene is dragging on too long, and when the jokes just are not working. You also have to be careful with stereotypes because not only could they be offensive, but overdone, and they might not be amusing. Liquid did a good job of following all these points, and very much enjoyed themselves as well.
If you are up for a laugh, are not easily offended, and do not mind being in a small crowded bar, you can catch Liquid at the Green Door Tavern on Orleans and Huron, every other Friday of the month. Next show is April 27. Doors open at 8:00 PM and admission is $5. www.myspace.com/liquidcomedy
