College scholarships often have strict academic, community service, and leadership requirements. Therefore, one would think that people who don’t necessarily possess traditional skills and abilities are left without funds. But that isn’t necessarily true. There is hope for those who are looking to fund their education through weird and unusual scholarships.
Some scholarships are outrageous, hilarious, or just plain dumb! A few of these weird scholarships include names like the Zolp Scholarship, The Fat Acceptance Scholarship, The Pot Scholarship, and The Talls Clubs International Scholarship.
The Zolp Scholarship is a 4-year, full tuition scholarship to Chicago’s Loyola University. Father William Zolp, whom had mixed feelings about his curious last name, set it up in 1977.
The Lefty Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship for people with sufficient grades by Frederick and Mary Beckley. Both of them were lefties and left the scholarship in their will as an attribute to left-handed romance.
The David Letterman Scholarship targets “average yet creative” telecommunication majors. He believes that students with average grades should also receive financial assistance in school. “This scholarship is dedicated to all C-students before me and after me,” says Letterman.
The Calgon scholarship is a $5000 award for women who answer girly questions like “Calgon’s Intense Eau de Parfum sprays are sophisticated, simple, irresistible and long-lasting. Tell us what makes your closest friendship last.”
The Pot Scholarship is a scholarship given to college students from The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. The scholarship is for $650 and is given to those who write essays outlining a more “sensible” drug policy for the United States.
The Goodie Goodie scholarship is a scholarship for female “A” students at Pennsylvania’s Bucknell University who do not smoke, drink, chew tobacco, take drugs, or participate in strenuous athletic contests. Joseph H. Deppen, who donated the money to the university in memory of his sister, gives the scholarship to the student.
The Fat Acceptance Scholarship is for $500 and is given to an obese individual who respond to questions about his or her attitude towards fat people and acceptance.
Similarly, The Tall Club’s International Scholarship is a scholarship for $1000 which is awarded to students who write essays on “What Being Tall Means To Me”.
The Sammy Award is a $7500 grant sponsored by the “Got Milk” campaign and USA Today. This odd scholarship requires some leadership ability and academic achievement in addition to the sporting of a milk mustache.
There are scholarships that fit the personalities, the names, the traits, and characteristics of a wide variety of individuals. One doesn’t have to be an over-achiever to get scholarships for college. Some scholarships allow a person to just be themselves and reward them for being just that, a person!
