Everyone is aware that gas prices are going way up. It’s nothing new, but people still think they can change it!
On May 15th, tons of emails, and text messages, and other forms of communication were sent out to tell everyone not to buy gas on that particular day. Supposedly it happened on the same day in 1997, and gas companies were so upset that they actually lowered gas thirty whole cents.
Well that’s great, but look at this more closely. For one thing, not buying gas for one whole day is NOT going to effect gas companies, you know why? Because people are just going to buy gas either the day before, the day after, or some other time that week. The main point is they are still buying gas!
The gas companies probably don’t even notice the loss. However, the people who do notice the loss is the gas station attendants! They are not making money because you aren’t buying anything, is this fair? Is it fair to let them take a loss when they did nothing?
The best way to get back at gas companies is to not buy any gas at all! Many people are taking the bus, or the L, or just investing some money in a good mountain bike. Most commuters though, myself included, rely on our vehicles to get us everywhere. But then again, every little bit helps! It wouldn’t kill us to walk the two blocks to the grocery store rather then drive, or even to ride a bike to work if it’s only a couple miles.
It’s easy to be lazy, and if you’re anything like me then you don’t wake up in time to walk to work. But if you REALLY want gas prices to go down, then were all going to have to sacrifice. Or, you could always go out and buy a hybrid!
