Crossing international music boundaries

Razor & Tie co-released Djin Djin (pronounced “gin gin”) with Starbucks Entertainment. The 13-track album by Benin-born artist Angelique Kidjo features collaborative efforts with musical artists known to have distinctive connections with Africa.

The majority of Djin Djin is sung mainly in Kidjo’s native Benin languages, but also showcases her fluency in English and French. Kidjo’s main appeal is her cultural awareness and rich voice. Whether singing solo, or in conjunction with other artists, Kidjo shines with her unique expression and vocal flexibility. Her voice bends like a Cirque du Soleil performer across the air.

Ken Lombard – president of Starbucks Entertainment – praises Kidjo thus, “Angelique Kidjo is a treasure. Her remarkable music has captivated audiences around the world.” There is a mutual excitement between the two production companies over the release of this innovative CD.

Music business, indeed most business, is earmarked by the axiom, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Kidjo received an outstanding offer by Josh Groban: to be the sole support for his entire North American tour. Undoubtedly she gained an enormous amount of exposure through this opportunity. Groban is featured Djin Djin: a moving cover of Sade’s “Pearls,” along with the guitar signature of Santana.

Other acclaimed stars are featured throughout the new album. Alicia Keys and Branford Marsalis Grace. Joss Stone lends her musical talent to The Rolling Stones Gimme Shelter. Peter Gabriel is heard in the soothing rhythms of Salala. Senamou with the presence of Amadou and Mariam. Ziggy Marley is another voice heard on the Sejedo.

Overall, the album provides a clean, funky sound worth of dancing, lounging, or parties. It is versatile, functional, and stirring. Angelique Kidjo’s unique voice, spirit, and experience contribute to this compilation’s total effect on the listener.

Kidjo is not only an excellent musician; she is also deeply involved in global charity work. She is a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, and continually works to better her music, and her world.
