Murs for President

Murs for President at first comes off as another rap artist trying to be different with a fresh new sound; yes I know we have all heard it before. I can strongly say with confidence that this CD defiantly shines.

He brings a strong message to the table, not only about African American youth, but also about the corruption of our nation’s government that we as a people need to address. Murs explains that because he is anti-gang, anti-drugs, and anti-thug that many artists do not support his view. This is a shame. It would be nice to see rap go back to when it was educating and promoting unity. Many of today’s youth do not remember artist like The Roots, Arrested Development, and The Sugar Hill Gang. Many do not remember when rap was not about money, cars, violence, and sex.

However, there was that time when rap brought a message to everyone a message worth listening to, worth singing along with. Murs reminds me of these forgotten artists in much of the way that the artist Common does.

The second track introduces Murs and what he stands for. He raps about culture, and issues plaguing today’s societies. The third track was in my opinion, a little stale, but not bad. By the fourth track Murs breaks down the origin of hip-hop that he labels simple “science”. Close to the end of the CD, Murs visits an area that many rap artist have forgotten about: relationships, love, and respect for women. I listened to the whole CD and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope some of you will too.

I definitely would suggest this CD to anyone. Even if you never listen to rap or hip-hop music in your life, this would be a good CD to start off with.
