Earth Day Event 2011

Just like any other year, Earth Day was celebrated on April 20. At NEIU, the day’s festivities took place in room 240 of the Science Building. Throughout the afternoon a few dozen participants joined in to learn more about environmental issues from a variety of presenters. From political action regarding urban environmental issues, to other environmental issues – the celebration touched on a variety of topics.

Eric Sharer, a Clinical Nutrition Specialist presented tips for living a vegan lifestyle. Ethical concerns were presented by Kenny Torella, Coordinator for Mercy for Animals. St. Martaen, a local vegan cheese maker, provided food samples and demonstrated show-ware. Cousins Incredible Vitality gave cooking lessons, provided pesto and vegetarian pasta. Assorted films, raffle giveaways, and other Earth Day activities kept visitors engaged. Organizer, Regina Torres feels the event was a success, but adds that she reluctantly steps aside to “face new leadership responsibilities and experiences.” Torres cofounded the Animal Rights Club more than three years ago. She wanted this year’s Earth Day Event to be a “last blowout before allowing others to step up.”
