Honors Society Hosts First Ever Chocolate Party

In order to promote unity within the NEIU student community, the National Honors Society Club, the Psychology Club (as well as their honors organization, Psi Chi) and the French Club threw a chocolate themed party of delicious proportions on Nov. 16 in Alumni Hall.

The event had been posted on Facebook a few weeks prior to the event to allow students to RSVP; by the date of the event, they received 60 replies of “Attending.” On the day of the event, the word “chocolate party” echoed through the halls of NEIU and far more people showed up than those who did RSVP. The hosting clubs were more than happy to have them join in on the fun.

The actual event started later than the advertised 3 p.m. due to a mix up with the catering service but that did not put a damper on ever increasing flow of the party goers’ spirits. The president of the National Honors Society Club, Jose Miranda, kicked off the party with a short educational video about the history of chocolate and its journey from South American delicacy to American household commodity. Once the film was over the promised chocolate fountains were set up and marshmallows were ready for chocolate coating, while the musical talents of Jackie Holiday and Angela Z played in the background.

The menu for the night (aside from delicious chocolate drenched delicacies such as marshmallows and an assortment of fruit) consisted of pita slices, tortilla chips, salsa, spinach and artichoke dip, Salisbury steak sandwiches and boneless buffalo chicken wings. Also, on the dessert table (as if there was not enough chocolaty goodness) were chocolate cake slices, chocolate muffins, doughnuts and chocolate cookies, as well as a variety of drinks to keep one’s palate refreshed.

As the night progressed, the Lane Tech Philippine Dance Club and the Soul and Duende Spanish Dance Flamenco Company performed for the party’s guests. Whenever the stage was not taken over by a performing group, DJ pH Balance had an assortment of popular music playing in the background.

Overall, the event was a bigger success than any of the three clubs could have hoped for and both Miranda and Psychology Club President Theodora Koumatsakis intend to make this an annual event.
