In honor of Women’s History Month, Robin Heggum Instructor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics, hosted a screening of the film “Killing Us Softly III,” by Jean Kilbourne, on Tuesday March 9.
This was the first year Instructor Heggum invited the public to join her class for the screening. Instructor Heggum has been using this film since the fall of 2005, when she began teaching at NEIU.
An inquiry was made via inter-campus mail regarding any possible upcoming events that would help pay homage to Women’s History Month. The film was an obvious fit for Heggum.
“The film is used to illustrate the lack of variety in images of women. A significant portion is dedicated to gender roles and this film nicely pulls together ideas discussed in previous class sessions,” said Heggum.
After the film, the class and guests engaged in a heated group discussion. The event took place during one of her classes and ended promptly at the usual time. If the event is open to the public again, Heggum would be happy to extend the discussion period. The screening was a great way for the University to honor Women’s History Month.
