UTATU Collective hosted The Black Panther Movement at the Jacob Carruthers ‘s Center for Inner City Studies on April 8. Special Guest speakers were former Black Panthers. This event allowed students to donate money and enter a raffle to win a prize at the end of the event. The money raised will help fund UTATU Collective’s trip to Brazil to study abroad over the summer.
The event began with Professor/advisor Gimbu Kali who did the liberation. Kali spoke in Swahili and then translated to English. Liberation is to call out the spirit of your ancestors. Next, Nubian Malik began with the pledge to the red, black and green flag. He instructed everyone to put their fist in their air and repeat the words he said.
UTATU Collective presented awards to Kali and Phil Pugh for helping and advising the organization. Also, UTATU gave thanks to Viola Henry for her help and appreciation.
A film about the history of the Black Panthers was shown. Immediately following after that the panel of former Black Panthers, David Lumieux Wanda Ross, and Kwame Cobb, discussed the Black Panther Movement.
