All the Shades of Grey: Ignorance is free

$1.25 for a newspaper? I think not. I just spent $10 on a super-size mocha-lada and a copy of Fashion Weekly. My favorite episode of Will and Grace was rudely interrupted for some breaking news on the presidential elections. Everything I need to know about the world should be accessible in two minute commercial clips during my favorite shows. Otherwise, how I am gonna stay in tune?

With the cancellation of the latest Gossip Girls episode, I was forced to pay attention. Everyone is talking about McCain this and Obama that. There’s a weird buzz in the air. Television news is running non-stop. Printing presses are standing by. And someone told me that history is happening now.

Of course it is. J-Lo ditched Project Runway and 90210 is back on the air. My best friend broke up with her boyfriend and I think I broke a nail. While the world analyzes the presidential candidates, I analyze my wardrobe. Do I have enough winter sweaters? Do these gloves match this hat? And more importantly, why is the credit card company refusing to raise my credit limit at such an important time? I mean, I have to go Christmas shopping soon! Talk about an economic crisis.

Who will I vote for, you ask? Well, Obama is a cutie and his suits are sharp. But McCain’s wife is definitely in the fashion know. Between her and Palin, imagine how they could spice up the White House. And Palin’s wearing those super-fly boots and those snazzy red shoes. This may turn out to be a close election after all.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not all about the superficial. I think it’s important that we are fighting terrorism in the world. We’ve got to defeat the evil empire! I’m also concerned about health care. I mean, my insurance wouldn’t even pay for my last massage therapy session. How does the government expect me to be a healthy, hard working citizen if I can’t even get a decent massage in this city?

I don’t know what you think about all this political mumbo-jumbo. But I know it’s important to pay attention. So let’s talk about the real issues. We need to care for the poor and stand up for justice. We need to remember that the children are our future. And most importantly, we need to pray for world peace. Amen.
