Electronica-alternative is the different style that the band Kinky brings to the stage. But not to be out-done by bands like Panic at the Disco and Falling Star, Kinky mixes English and Spanish vocals to make a sound completely their own.
For first time Kinky listeners, the vibe is extremely energetic and playful. The thoughts of a Spanish quince-sañera fill the air, with kids hitting piñatas and adults kicking back, drinking Dos Equis. Kinky fans will appreciate the new spin on their old favorites. But this style of music comes with a disclaimer. After listening to this type of music over and over again, the songs could mess together and start sounding the same… so take Kinky in doses.
With the release of Kinky’s 4th album, Rarities, at the end of last year, their popularity has grown by word of mouth. This 14 song album consists of mostly dance remixes and live performances of their known tracks like “Oye Como Va” and “Mas.” Unlike their last album, Reina, which featured a mix of Spanglish lyrics from vocalist Gilberto Cerezo, Rarities is mostly Spanish lyrics with a low lyrical value. Songs like “Coqueta” (which translates into vain and pretty) repeatedly talks about a woman’s flirtatious nature, and keeps a great dance beat, making someone pumped to work out, and gets you ready for a long night of dancing. Guitarists Carlos Chairez and Cesar Pliego add to the steady and eclectic feel of every song. Their bouncy rhythm is accompanied by bongo and typical Mexican style drum beats, thanks to keyboardist Ulises Lozano and drummer Oman Gongora.
Kinky’s energetic style has been featured on MTV’s Laguna Beach and Dance Life. They have also been nominated for two Latin Grammy awards.
Kinky kicked off their first U.S. tour at the beginning of this year and will be coming to the city of Chicago on Sat Feb. 23 and playing at the Metro in Wrigleyville.
