Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan welcomed attendees of a Campus Safety Summit in the Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) Alumni Hall on Dec. 13, 2007. The summit, which was quietly organized and held with no PR preamble to the student press, was kicked off by Madigan at 9 a.m. who led the three hour conference. Law enforcement specialist speakers included two U.S. Secret Service (USSS) agents, Tim Viertel and Megan K. Williams, and a retired Chief of Police from New Bedford, Massachusetts, Arthur J. Kelly III. Williams is a Threat Assessment Specialist with the USSS National Threat Assessment Center. Viertel is the Special Agent in Charge of USSS Chicago Field Office. Despite the high profile opening speaker, the agenda of campus safety, and the on-campus location of the event, Erika Krehbiel, the Public Relations Director of NEIU, insisted her decision not to inform the Independent of the summit in advance was due to it not being a university function.
