In the past, NEIU has been nationally recognized as being the most ethnically diverse institution of high learning in the Midwest. Extracurricular participation from students at NEIU is often lost for several reasons. The first being that we are a commuter campus, second, our university has many students whom continue their education after starting families, and third, some student organizations do not appeal to the university’s population. NEIU has several organizations that cater to its large multicultural student body. However, it appears students do not take the time to observe how the organizations can enhance their experience at NEIU.
The Fall 2007 semester brings about a change here at NEIU. A student organization from the past is working its way back to campus with a new vision. Under new student leadership, the Black Caucus, not only is seeking chartering on campus again, but unity among all underrepresented populations here at NEIU. The Black Caucus is hoping to bridge the gap between students and their extracurricular lives. The Black Caucus has a strong belief that education is the first concern of students, however, extracurricular activities help supplement knowledge gained in the classroom.
Communication skills and group activities are among the benefits of extracurricular activity.
Mary Whitehead, President of the Black Caucus, believes the student group will be a resurgence of school pride at NEIU. Whitehead stated, “The Black Caucus believes that involvement and participation in campus-based programs enhances self-esteem, self-confidence, respect for others, and the development of strong leadership skills. The Black Caucus will definitely be a resurgence of school pride at NEIU because its intent is to reach the scope and breadth of the entire student body, and become a prominent vehicle for student involvement.”
The Black Caucus wants to add to the multicultural experience on campus. Many cultures are often silenced and lack a presence on campus. Whitehead stated, “The Black Caucus wants to extend NEIU students the opportunity to grow and to learn in a supportive environment, promoting the recognition and involvement of African American students, and to make an impact on the decisions regarding students of the University community. It further enhances awareness and appreciation of cultural diversity among students and the University community.”
Membership is open to all NEIU students regardless of race, creed, or religion. However, students who seek membership should be currently enrolled in the university and must possess a 2.5 GPA to be eligible for membership
The Black Caucus is seeking permanent stability on NEIU’s campus. When asked where she believes the Black Caucus will be in five years, Mary Whitehead stated, “I believe the Black Caucus will be a premier organization that stands for Campus, Community and Academic pride.”
