In a “History of Free Speech” in the “Freshman’s Guide to NEIU” the Independent reported that the Free Speech Taskforce had been an active committee since 2004. The Free Speech Task Force was actually formed in 2006 in response to HOME’s appearance on campus to figure out rules relating to free speech and the use of the “Free Speech Zone” in Village Square.
In 2004 a Diversity Committee was formed to address the demands of the GLBA after an appearance on campus by HOME in late 2003. The GLBA’s demands included issues dealing with free speech vs. “hate speech” and clarification on rules relating to free speech and the use of Village Square.
