Getting in!

The most important thing about going to school is getting into classes. Sometimes it’s harder than you may think. Most of the classes you need are also classes your fellow students need, and there are usually only one to three different sections to choose from.

Also, there is the fact that freshmen generally have less registration priority than those in higher grade levels. You may also be registering during open or late registration as well. Lets just face it; you probably won’t get your ideal schedule right off the bat.

Not to worry though, because there are still several ways to get into a closed class. The first and easiest thing to do is to just show up for the first day and sit in. Most teachers are aware that there will be people trying to get in and will ask up front who is not registered for the class. Each class has a limited number of seats to be filled.

If the teacher is really awesome, they will let everyone in regardless of how many seats are available. Unfortunately, most teachers aren’t that nice or flexible and they either will not let you in or put everyone on a waiting list. If this is the case you will have to wait till someone drops the class before you can get in.

If you don’t get in, or get put on a waiting list, your next option is to talk and beg the teacher to let you in. Sometimes if you explain your situation and sound convincing enough they will let you in or let you stick around until someone drops the class, which could be a day or two.

Don’t worry too much, most of the time you will get into the class just by showing up the first day. It has only been once that I have not gotten into a class because it was full. If worst comes to worst and you simply cannot get in, there is always next semester. Just remember to register as early as you can!
