New campus organizations

In a recently released newsletter for January 2007, the Student Activities Office (SAO) announced six new student organizations: Bicycle Club, Honor Society, SABBE, Illinois Education Association, Gamma Phi Omega and Omega Delta.

The Spring 2007 Student Organization Fair was held January 24 and 25 in the Village Square showcasing the university’s student clubs and activities.

In Fall 2006, a large number of NEIU student organizations failed to attend the required basic training sessions, which prompted the SAO to deactivate these organizations.

In a list obtained by the Independent from the Student Activities Office, a large number of student organizations are still inactive and even had their charters revoked.

Some of these inactive and revoked organizations have been so for years. The other organizations were deactivated due to failure to attend basic training sessions or not having a charter.

Some inactive organizations include the Psychology Club, Students Against the War, and the Northeastern Illinois University Polish Students Association, which failed to attend the spring 2007 basic training.

All NEIU organizations are required to attend basic training sessions. These training sessions provide guidance and direction to ensure the organization is fairly serving the student body. Basic training also informs student organizations of recent changes in university policies and regulations.

Basic training for Spring 2007 was held January 16 and 17. This meeting excludes annually funded student groups, media organizations and Greek organizations.

Organizations that did not attend the Fall 2006 training were required to have a representative present at these sessions. Annually funded student organizations had a separate training January 18. A representative form each organization was required to attend. The Independent is an annually funded student media organization.

Three of the six new student organizations are inactive due to pending charter and orientation of new officers. These organizations are: Bicycle Club, Honor Society, and Student Association for Bilingual/Bicultural Education (SAABE).

NEIU’s newest Greek organizations, Gamma Phi Omega and Omega Delta, are active. Gamma Phi Omega International Sorority, Inc. has been active on campus since the beginning of this year. Omega Delta Fraternity, Inc. has been active since October 2006. Gamma Phi Omega Sorority, Omega Delta Fraternity, and Theta Chi Omega Multicultural Sorority are currently hosting informationals. Clubs post information on events and how to join on bulletin boards on campus.
