Dorm Rooms to Boardrooms by Victoria Pilate is all about life after college. The first chapters go into the job search, the necessary resume-building and job fairs or mixers.
There are great tips on making an early start during college. There are also little stories about people who were surveyed and responded with good advice on every topic in the book. It even goes over a little bit about employment contracts. There is advice on what to do even if you graduate without a job waiting.
After getting a job, Pilate goes on to talk about relocating somewhere closer to work. She writes about finding the right neighborhood and the right roommate, if that is what you need. There is a list of questions to ask during those types of interviews.
She then writes about the actual workplace. The proper attitude is a theme throughout the book. The proper attitude could make you blend in or stand out in a good way.
Pilate not only writes about the work place; she also writes about personal health. After the stress of finding and keeping a job, personal fitness is usually ignored. Various illnesses are described with different ways to prevent or treat them. The passage about the causes and treatment of acne and acne scars was likeable.
Sleeplessness is also discussed, as well as explanations as to the causes of it and some ways to help with it. Stress, ergonomics, obesity, and mental health issues were also very important topics discussed in the book.
Mental health in particular had a big section that included everything from attention deficit disorder to panic attacks to suicide warnings. It was very knowledgeable about symptoms and ways of handling problems.
Pilate has written a book that everyone can get some good ideas from, but the work environment that she writes about deals more with business-related jobs. That makes reading the passages a bit harder to get through. It tends to get a bit technical or, at the very least, it gets detailed.
Overlooking the section on office work does not deter from the wealth of good advice that is found in every page of this book. It’s not just a book on getting a job. It’s a book on living the best life possible.
